Local 2110 members rally in support of the Employee Free Choice Act in Washington, DC

THE EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT:

Today, workers who try to organize a union are often threatened, intimidated and even fired by their employers. Even if every employee at a particular workplace has signed a card supporting the union, the employer can use the NLRB process to delay recognizing and bargaining with the union. Employers can force workers into months of labor board hearings and an unfair election process during which the employer will use every trick in the book to scare workers into voting "no".

But new, bipartisan legislation will be able to change this and finally restore fairness for workers. This legislation, the Employee Free Choice Act, will require employers to recognize a union when a majority of the workers sign union cards. It will also help to ensure that workers are able to get a first contract, by providing mediation and arbitration if the union and the employer aren't able to reach an agreement. The Act will also increase penalties on employers who violate the rights of employees who are trying to organize. The Employee Free Choice Act is supported by Congressional leaders from both parties, and President-Elect Barack Obama has vowed to sign the legislation when it crosses his desk.
