DEPARTMENT OF CINEMA STUDIES FACULTY RESOLUTION
DEC 1, 2005

It is the view of the faculty of the Department of Cinema Studies that the instructions issued in the Provost's November 28th memo constitute a grave violation of academic freedom and normal university governance procedures by asserting administrative control over academic decisions that are the prerogative of the faculty and the department; namely, the constitution of the curriculum and the allocation of teaching responsibilities within it. Specifically, it requires the department to participate in disciplinary actions against graduate students in good academic standing outside any established university framework governing such actions. It undermines the authority of departments to determine which graduate students in good standing are assigned teaching positions within the department. It demands of faculty that they perform actions that will explicitly contravene their own stated commitment to neutrality in the strike and that will fundamentally undermine departmental morale.

Accordingly, the faculty of the Department of Cinema Studies hereby reaffirms its stated commitment to neutrality. We refuse to endorse punitive actions against striking students. We refuse to endorse any action in the context of this strike, which in our judgment would affect academic quality and standards. We will continue to design the curriculum, conduct courses, and allocate teaching responsibilities, according to what we consider to be the best interests of the undergraduate and graduate students in our field, in conformity with established principles of faculty governance. In summary, we find the policies outlined in the provost's memo both inappropriate and unworkable and call upon the administration to withdraw them.

DEPARTMENT OF COMPARATIVE LITERATURE FACULTY RESOLUTION
DECEMBER 2, 2005

In light of recent communications from the President and Provost we, the faculty of the Department of Comparative Literature, reaffirm our commitment to neutrality in our earlier October resolution (appended below), and declare our support for the continuing academic work and progress of our graduate students.

We further resolve not to report to the administration on the decisions of our graduate students regarding the strike and reaffirm our commitment to established departmental procedures governing good standing, academic progress, and teaching assignments. This last means that the Department will not revise the Spring 2006 teaching schedule by December 15, 2005, as requested by the Provost.

In addition, we insist on the Department's right to cancel any planned Spring courses, or to cap their enrollments, if the administration declares any of the TAs or preceptors which the department has assigned to teach them ineligible to teach.

The resolution referred to was approved at a faculty meeting held on Tuesday, Oct. 18th. It reads as follows:

In the event of a strike called by the Graduate Student Union, we, the Faculty of the Department of Comparative Literature agree to

1) teach classes off campus wherever possible,

2) find alternative ways to lecture, etc., wherever classes are too large for such relocation (e.g., by using Blackboard audio-visual facilities),

3) support and protect students, staff and other faculty in their choices of conscience to strike or not to strike, to cross or not to cross picket lines and other lawful actions their conscience may dictate,

4) undertake no harassment, denunciation, intimidation of or interference with students, staff and faculty undertaking such actions of conscience as indicated in 3).

DEPARTMENT OF EAST ASIAN STUDIES FACULTY RESOLUTION
December 1, 2005

The Provost's November 28 instruction to "Deans, Directors, and Department Chairs" places the department's faculty and specifically its officers (chair, DGS, and DUGS) in an untenable position. It overrides established procedures of academic evaluation by asking the department to participate in disciplinary actions against graduate students in good academic standing and by doing so outside of any established university framework governing such actions. It overrides established procedures governing the process by which graduate students in good departmental standing are assigned teaching positions in the department's curriculum. And it demands of departmental officers that they take actions, which will be destructive of their own departments and of their own stated commitments to remain neutral in the event of a strike.

Accordingly, the Department of East Asian Studies affirms that (1) faculty will refuse to serve as informants against striking students; (2) faculty will refuse to enforce any sanctions against striking students, including the withdrawal of their teaching eligibility or the rescinding of their fellowships; and (3) faculty will not impose sanctions on striking students by revising the spring teaching schedule to exclude those who refuse to self-report on their strike activities.

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH FACULTY RESOLUTION
DECEMBER 1, 2005

In light of recent communications from the President and Provost we, the English department faculty, re-affirm the commitment to neutrality in our earlier November resolution, and declare our support for the continuing academic work and progress of our graduate students.

DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY FACULTY RESOLUTION
DECEMBER 1, 2005

The Provost's November 28 instruction to "Deans, Directors, and Department Chairs" places the department's faculty and specifically its officers (chair, DGS, and DUGS) in an untenable position. It overrides established procedures of academic evaluation by asking the department

DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS FACULTY RESOLUTION
DECEMBER 2, 2005

Those present at today's faculty meeting in Linguistics have unanimously decided that

i. The Department of Linguistics, exercising our proper authority over teaching assignments in accordance with normal university governance practice and with our policy of neutrality with respect to graduate student unionization, will continue to make graduate student teaching assignments according to our collective judgment of our students' competence and suitability, without regard to the positions they have taken with respect to the graduate student union and its actions.

ii. The Department of Linguistics, in accordance with established practice, hereby authorizes instructors in the department to vary the places and times of their class meetings in order to facilitate attendance and to accommodate the needs of graduate and undergraduate students in the context of the present strike

DEPARTMENT OF PERFORMANCE STUDIES FACULTY RESOLUTION
DECEMBER 2, 2005

Whereas the Provost's November 28 instruction to "Deans, Directors, and Department Chairs" places the department's faculty and specifically its Chair in an untenable position;

Whereas it overrides established procedures of academic evaluation by asking the department to participate in disciplinary actions against graduate students in good academic standing and by doing so outside of any established university framework governing such actions;

Whereas it overrides established procedures governing the process that assigns graduate students in good standing to teaching and g.a. positions in the department;

Whereas it demands of departmental officers that they take actions which will be destructive of their own departments and of their own stated commitments to remain neutral in the event of a strike;

Whereas it erodes freedoms of conscience and association that are vital to educational enterprise;

Whereas it threatens to erode crucial mentoring relationships between faculty and graduate students if the proposed policy were implemented;

Accordingly, the Department of Performance Studies hereby reaffirms its commitment to neutrality and more specifically affirms that, consistent with our previous departmental resolution,

Faculty will refuse to serve as informants against striking students;

Faculty will refuse to enforce any sanctions against striking students, including the withdrawal of their teaching eligibility or the rescinding of their fellowships.

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY FACULTY RESOLUTION
DECEMBER 2, 2005

The Provost's November 28 instruction to "Deans, Directors, and Department Chairs" places the department's faculty and specifically its officers (chair, DGS, and DUGS) in an untenable position. It overrides established procedures of academic evaluation by asking the department to participate in disciplinary actions against graduate students in good academic standing and by doing so outside of any established university framework governing such
actions. It overrides established procedures governing the process by which graduate students in good standing are assigned teaching positions in the department's curriculum. And it demands of departmental officers that they take actions which will be destructive of their own departments and of their own stated commitments to remain neutral in the event of a strike.

Accordingly, the Department of Sociology hereby reaffirms its commitment to neutrality and more specifically affirms that, consistent with our previous departmental resolution, (1) faculty will refuse to serve as informants against striking students; (2) faculty will refuse to enforce any sanctions against striking students, including the withdrawal of their teaching eligibility or the rescinding of their fellowships; (3) faculty will not impose sanctions on striking students by revising the spring teaching schedule to exclude those who refuse to self-report on their strike
activities; and (4) the department will not hire instructors to replace teaching assistants in good academic standing whom the administration has declared ineligible to teach.

DEPARTMENT OF SPANISH & PORTUGUESE FACULTY RESOLUTION
DECEMBER 2, 2005

At an emergency meeting of the faculty of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese on December 2nd, 2005, the following resolution was approved unanimously by those in attendance (Sylvia Molloy, Jim Fernandez, Gigi Dopico-Black, Sibylle Fischer, Salvador Martinez, Helene Anderson, Judith Nemethy, Marta Peixoto, Ana Dopico, Tracy Bishop, Carlos Martinez).

The Provosts's November 28 instruction to "Deans, Directors, and Departmental Chairs" places the department's faculty and specifically its officers (chair, DGS, and DUGS) in an untenable position. It represents an unprecedented and dangerous infringement on departmental autonomy by the administration. It also demands of departmental officers that they take actions which will be destructive of our department.

Accordingly, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese resolves that (1) faculty wil not serve as informants against striking students; (2) faculty will not enforce any sanctions against striking students, including the withdrawal of their teaching eligibility or the rescinding of their fellowships; and (3) the department will not hire instructors to replace teaching assistants in good academic standing whom the administration has declared inelligible to teach.
