GSOC STRIKE INFO 2005-2006

The GSOC strike began on Wednesday, November 9, 2005. Hundreds of classes and sections were cancelled, and still hundreds more were moved off-campus by faculty members in a showing of solidarity. Despite widespread support from NYU faculty, staff and undergrads, as well as the broader community and the national labor movement, the NYU administration continues to refuse to come to the bargaining table.

Faced with the massive disruption and pressure of our strike, the NYU administration has resorted to outright threats and intimidation, which would have been unlawful under the pre-Bush National Labor Relations Act. President John Sexton sent a letter to the NYU community, threatening any graduate assistant who did not return to work by December 5 with the loss of future employment. President Sexton was forced to push back this deadline after his office was flooded with letter and calls of protest. In spite of the university's threats, GSOC members are determined to win a fair second contract.

As the spring semester came to a close, GSOC members voted to suspend the strike for the summer, and we are continuing to organize new members this fall to prepare for future actions.
